The UK's capability in this important area has been established, tested and perfected over several decades of producing the North Sea’s oil and gas resources. The UK is recognised as a global centre for the provision of high quality accredited skills development, training and competency testing.

Today, UK universities and training institutions are established in all of the world’s leading oil centres, helping international clients to develop more efficient and safer workforces and increase productivity in operations. UK Trade and Investment, plays a leading role in promoting the UK’s training expertise overseas, for example, by publishing the UK Education and Training Guide for the Oil and Gas Industry. This document was developed in cooperation with the British Council and offers a comprehensive overview of UK expertise in the areas of standards and accreditation, technical and craft training, HSE and further / higher education courses.

Many challenges faced by the oil and gas industry have been overcome through the efficiency of well trained craft workers, technicians, support personnel, engineers and managers. The UK business and educational sectors reacted to demand by equipping industry workers with the qualifications and skills training needed to deal with complex commercial, technological and management matters. There is an employer-owned skills academy - OPITO in the oil and gas sector. Universities, institutions and training providers in the UK offer a very broad range of courses that can often be adapted to meet the specific needs of national and international operators, service companies, government and non-government institutions and organisations. Usually the courses are given locally, but blended learning is increasingly and frequently used to help offset operational or budgetary constraints.

Promoting competence in health and safety in the Oil & Gas industry is a priority the world over. As one of the best regulated working environments in the world, the UK has developed and now offers a highly sophisticated range of training programmes and competence assessment methods in health, safety, environmental management, survival and management of emergencies among many others.
