The UK has engaged on a significant review of its energy needs recognising the commitments made on carbon emissions will require a new energy mix if the UK is to meet its targets set for 2050. Details of UK Energy Policy can be found here.
Nuclear power is now back on the agenda with the publication of a UK Government White Paper "Meeting the Energy Challenge - A White Paper on Nuclear Power". This has re-established Nuclear Power firmly into the UK Energy Mix. Further details can be found on the Website of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills
The Government has published the UK Low Carbon Transition Plan, a route map to a low carbon economy in the UK. The Transition Plan is the most systematic response to climate change of any major developed economy, and sets standards for others in the run up to crucial talks in Copenhagen in December.
UK companies, recognising the challenges ahead, are working together in groups such as the Knowledge Transfer Networks (KTNs). Working under the auspices of the Technogy Strategy Board, KTNs seek to maximise knowledge across sectors.
Direct links with Universities and other Research and Development establishments are a core part of the process of innovating for business which can be found within many areas of the UK energy sector.
UK Energy Sector Indicators were also released on 30 July 2009, by the Department of Energy and Climate Change. This publication is designed to show in headline form the progress that has been made in implementing the key energy policy goals.
So how will the UK continue to grow its energy sector to help meet the growing energy demand expected around the world whilst meeting its own government's targets for carbon emissions? The solution will be to develop its own capability to meet the challenges set by its own government and export these to the world. In the short term however particularly in Renewable and Nuclear energy, the UK will work with international partners to meet its targets and develop the capability it needs. This is how the UK Oil & Gas industry emerged in the 1970's to become the world class industry it is today.
