40% of World CDM Projects approved in UK.

Of 1,899 projects registered by the UN so far, 713 received host country approval by the UK.

All clean development mechanism (CDM) projects must first be registered by a host country before they can apply for UN registration.

And out of 1.6 billion credits expected to be issued by the UN, around 30 per cent, or 450 million, will likely head to the UK registry where most companies investing in the projects have accounts.

The data, which was updated last month, shows that 143 companies requested and were granted a UK letter of approval to invest in clean development mechanism projects.

The UK has so far given approval to 1,521 CDM projects that have the ability to produce 270 million carbon offsets per year.
